Age Matters, But It Isn't the Whole Story
Age tells us what to expect, not what to do. A younger system with a bad capacitor or a failed contactor is an easy repair and should keep running for years. An older system that has already had a compressor swap, a coil leak and a blower motor is telling you something. What we watch for is the pattern. One fault on a well-maintained unit is a repair. Three faults in two summers on a system that's near the end of its service life is a system winding down, and each fix buys less time than the last one did.
The Fault Type Tells Us the Most
Some failures are wear items. Capacitors, contactors, thermostats, blower motors and control boards all fail and all get replaced without touching the sealed refrigerant side. Those are repairs almost every time. The harder calls are compressor failure, a leaking evaporator or condenser coil, and refrigerant loss with no findable leak. Those involve the expensive core of the system, and on an older unit the rest of the equipment often isn't far behind. When we find one of those, we say so plainly and lay out both paths instead of just handing you a part number.
Parts Availability and Matched Equipment
A repair only works if the part exists. Older systems and discontinued models sometimes need parts that are hard to source across the region, and a long drive plus a special order can mean days without cooling in August. We'll tell you up front if that's the situation. Matching matters too. Heat pumps and AC systems are designed as a pair, indoor and outdoor. Replacing just the outdoor unit and leaving an old indoor coil and blower behind usually means the system never performs the way it should. If one half has failed and the other half is the same age, replacing both is often the more honest answer.
How We Think About It On The Visit
We diagnose first and talk second. That means finding the actual fault instead of guessing, checking the electrical side, the airflow, the coil condition and the refrigerant charge, and looking at the ductwork and the pad the outdoor unit sits on. In sandy soil and on well water, we also look for corrosion and grit where it shouldn't be. Then we tell you what's broken, what fixing it involves, and what else on the system looks tired. If a repair makes sense, we repair it. We don't turn a service call into a sales pitch, and you get to decide with the facts in hand.
Honest Cases Where Replacement Wins
There are situations where we'd replace rather than repair. A failed compressor on a system that's already old. A leaking coil on a unit running a refrigerant that's being phased out. Repeated repairs across consecutive seasons with no single root cause. A system that was undersized or oversized for the house from day one and has never kept up, no matter what we fix. And a heat pump that has been flooded or has severe corrosion through the cabinet. In those cases a repair is a patch, and we'd rather tell you that than take your money twice. If you smell gas near any equipment, leave the building, call 911 or your gas utility, then call us.

Repair or Replace an Air Conditioner — common questions
Can I just replace the outdoor unit and keep my old indoor coil?
Sometimes, but it often performs poorly. The indoor coil and blower are matched to the outdoor unit. Mixing an old indoor section with a new outdoor unit can cause airflow and capacity problems, and it may not be worth the trouble.
My air conditioner keeps losing refrigerant. Should I keep adding more?
Refrigerant doesn't get used up, so losing it means there's a leak. Repeated recharges without finding and fixing that leak is money spent on a symptom. We look for the leak first, then talk about whether repair or replacement makes sense.
What can I check myself before calling for air conditioning repair?
Check thermostat settings and batteries, look for a tripped breaker, change a dirty filter, clear leaves and grass clippings from around the outdoor unit, and make sure supply vents are open. Anything involving refrigerant, gas or high voltage, leave to us.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptoms
You describe what changed. No cold air, a breaker that keeps tripping, water near the air handler, a smell, a noise. That gives us a head start on parts before we ever leave the shop.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and coil, refrigerant behavior and the outdoor unit. We look at the whole system, because a frozen coil usually points somewhere else.
- Step 3
You decide the repair
We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and how long the rest of the system is likely to hold up. You pick the repair. We do not start work you did not approve.

Why homeowners call us
- Rural routes are normal for usWe drive long stretches between calls and we plan for it. Trucks carry the common heat pump and air conditioner repair parts so a diagnosis does not turn into a second trip on a hot afternoon.
- Heat pumps and sandy soilMost homes we visit run a heat pump, and sand, lawn clippings and pollen pack the outdoor coil fast. We clear it, check the defrost side in winter, and show you what we found before we close it up.
- Well water housesHomes on well water bring their own quirks, from pump-driven electrical noise to hard water on drain lines and condensate pans. We know where those systems clog and where the slow leaks hide.
- Heating repair tooCold snaps in this region are short and hard. We do heating repair and heater repair on heat pumps, strip heat and furnaces, so one crew handles your system in July and again in January.
- All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and more.
- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
