What The Repair Involves
A heat pump is supposed to frost up in cold weather and then shed that frost on a timed or demand cycle. It reverses briefly, warms the outdoor coil, melts the ice and goes back to heating. When that sequence fails, the ice keeps building until airflow stops. We arrive, watch the system run, and force a defrost cycle to see which part of the sequence breaks down. From there the fix is usually a control board, a sensor or a reversing valve solenoid.
What We Check
We start with the defrost thermostat or coil sensor, since a sensor reading the wrong temperature will either skip defrost entirely or run it constantly. Then the defrost board and its timer settings, the reversing valve and its solenoid coil, and the outdoor fan, which must stop during defrost. We check refrigerant pressures, coil cleanliness and drainage under the unit, because sandy soil and a low pad let meltwater pool and refreeze around the base. Loose or corroded low voltage wiring gets fixed while we are in there.
How We Decide It Is The Right Call
Heavy ice can come from a defrost fault, low refrigerant charge, a dirty indoor filter choking airflow or a sprinkler head spraying the coil. We separate those before ordering parts. If the sequence runs correctly and the ice still returns, the problem is elsewhere and we say so. On an older heat pump with a failing compressor and a bad board, we will lay out repair against replacement with real numbers rather than pushing one direction. Safe things you can do first: change the filter and clear leaves and debris away from the outdoor unit.

Is some ice on my heat pump normal?
Light frost on the outdoor coil in cold weather is normal and should clear within about ten to fifteen minutes on a defrost cycle. Solid ice covering the coil, the fan blade or the top grille means something is wrong.
Why does my heat pump steam and get loud in winter?
That is usually the defrost cycle working as designed. The unit reverses, the coil warms, and melting frost turns to visible steam. A whoosh from the reversing valve is normal. Call us if it happens every few minutes.
Should I pour hot water on the ice?
No. Water refreezes and can trap the fan or damage the coil fins. Switch to emergency heat if your thermostat has it, keep the area around the unit clear, and let us look at the defrost controls.
