What an emergency no-heat call involves
We start with the simple stuff, because a cold house is often a small failure. We confirm the thermostat is calling for heat, check power at the breaker and the disconnect, and look at the filter and return air. From there we move to the equipment itself: ignition on a gas furnace, sequencers and elements on electric strip heat, or the reversing valve and defrost board on a heat pump. Long rural routes mean we ask a few questions on the phone so the right parts ride out with us.
What we check and what we replace
On gas furnaces, the usual suspects are igniters, flame sensors, pressure switches, limits and draft inducers. On heat pumps, we look at contactors, capacitors, defrost controls, reversing valves and low refrigerant charge, plus the outdoor coil if it is packed with sand and pine straw. Electric heat failures are often elements, sequencers or a burnt connection at the air handler. We test rather than guess, show you the reading, and explain whether it is a repair tonight or a part we order in the morning.
How we decide emergency work is the right call
If the house is dropping toward unsafe temperatures, there is a small child or an older adult inside, or the system is doing something alarming like tripping a breaker repeatedly, that is an emergency and we treat it that way. If the heat is weak but running and the weather is mild, a scheduled heating repair visit usually serves you better and gives us time to source parts. My heat pump is blowing cool air in winter. Is that a no-heat emergency?
Not always. Heat pumps run cooler air than a furnace, and they run a defrost cycle that briefly feels cold. If the air stays cold for a long stretch and the house keeps losing temperature, call us for heater repair.
What should I do while I wait for a technician?
Keep interior doors open so air moves, make sure supply and return vents are not blocked, and use blankets and layers. Do not run a gas range or an outdoor grill indoors for heat. That risks carbon monoxide.
I smell gas near the furnace. Do I call you first?
No. Leave the building with everyone inside, do not flip switches, and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Once they have cleared the home, call us and we will handle the furnace repair.
