What Multi-Zone Repair Actually Involves
A multi-zone system shares one compressor and one set of refrigerant lines among several indoor heads, so a fault in one place can show up somewhere else. We start by confirming which zones respond and which stay dead, then work back through the branch box or distribution joints, the communication wiring between heads and the outdoor unit, and the control board reading those signals. Sometimes the repair is at the head. Often it is upstream, and only testing the whole system tells us which.
What We Check On Site
We read stored fault codes at the outdoor unit, check line voltage and the communication circuit to each head, and measure refrigerant pressures and temperatures across the system. Indoors we look at blower wheels, coil cleanliness, thermistors, and the condensate line and pump, since a blocked drain will shut a zone down and leave the others running. On homes with well water and sandy yards we also clear grit and debris from around the outdoor unit, because restricted airflow there drags every zone down at once.
How We Decide Repair Is The Right Call
We look at what failed, how many zones it affects, and the condition of the rest of the equipment. A bad thermistor, a clogged drain, a failed indoor blower motor or a loose communication wire is straightforward repair work, and we say so. Why does only one of my mini-split heads stop cooling?
Usually a fault at that head, its expansion valve, or its branch of the refrigerant and communication lines. Because zones share one outdoor unit, we test the whole system to find out whether the cause is local or upstream.
Can you add a zone to my existing multi-zone system?
Sometimes. It depends on the outdoor unit's rated capacity and how many ports it has. We check the nameplate and current load first, then tell you honestly whether it will carry another head.
One head is dripping water on the wall. Is that an emergency?
Turn that zone off at its remote and call us. It is almost always a blocked condensate drain or a failed pump, and leaving it running keeps soaking drywall and insulation behind the unit.
