What a dual-fuel repair actually involves
A dual-fuel system has two heat sources and one brain deciding between them. Most of the trouble we find lives in that decision: a failed outdoor sensor, a thermostat that lost its switchover setting, or wiring that never got configured right at installation. We test the heat pump in heating mode, then watch the handoff to the furnace at the balance point. If the furnace side is the problem, that is heating repair on the gas equipment, and we handle the combustion and safety checks ourselves.
What we check on the call
We start with the thermostat programming and the outdoor temperature sensor, since a bad reading sends the whole system the wrong way. Then the reversing valve, defrost board, and refrigerant charge on the heat pump side. On the furnace we check ignition, flame sense, the heat exchanger condition, and venting. We also look at the low-voltage wiring between the two units, because a loose or corroded connection out in sandy soil and damp crawl spaces is a common cause of odd switching.
How we decide repair is the right call
We look at the age and condition of both halves, because they rarely wear out together. A ten-year-old heat pump paired with a newer furnace usually means we repair the heat pump and leave the furnace alone. If the outdoor unit uses refrigerant that is hard to source, or the coil is leaking in several places, we say so plainly and price out options. We would rather fix the controls for a fraction of the cost than sell you equipment you do not need yet.

Why does my furnace run when it is fifty degrees outside?
Usually a switchover setting or a failed outdoor temperature sensor. The system thinks it is colder than it is, so it skips the heat pump. It is a common dual-fuel fault and often a straightforward repair.
Can you repair the heat pump without touching the furnace?
Yes. The two halves are separate equipment sharing a control strategy. If the heat pump has a bad reversing valve or defrost board, we repair that and verify the furnace still takes over correctly at the balance point.
I smell gas near the furnace. What should I do?
Leave the house right away, get everyone out, then call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Do not touch switches or the thermostat. Once the utility clears the property, call us for the repair.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptoms
You describe what changed. No cold air, a breaker that keeps tripping, water near the air handler, a smell, a noise. That gives us a head start on parts before we ever leave the shop.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and coil, refrigerant behavior and the outdoor unit. We look at the whole system, because a frozen coil usually points somewhere else.
- Step 3
You decide the repair
We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and how long the rest of the system is likely to hold up. You pick the repair. We do not start work you did not approve.

Why homeowners call us
- Rural routes are normal for usWe drive long stretches between calls and we plan for it. Trucks carry the common heat pump and air conditioner repair parts so a diagnosis does not turn into a second trip on a hot afternoon.
- Heat pumps and sandy soilMost homes we visit run a heat pump, and sand, lawn clippings and pollen pack the outdoor coil fast. We clear it, check the defrost side in winter, and show you what we found before we close it up.
- Well water housesHomes on well water bring their own quirks, from pump-driven electrical noise to hard water on drain lines and condensate pans. We know where those systems clog and where the slow leaks hide.
- Heating repair tooCold snaps in this region are short and hard. We do heating repair and heater repair on heat pumps, strip heat and furnaces, so one crew handles your system in July and again in January.
- All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and more.
- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
