What the Noise Is Actually Telling You
Sounds from the outdoor unit fall into rough groups, and the group matters more than the exact pitch. A buzz or hum usually points to something electrical, like a contactor pulling in or a motor straining. A rattle is almost always mechanical: loose hardware, a bent fan blade, or debris bouncing around inside the cabinet. A screech or squeal points to a bearing going dry or a compressor working harder than it should. A hard clunk on shutdown is different again. Cheapest Causes First: Debris and Loose Hardware

Screws back out over years of vibration too, so a panel or the top grille can buzz like a tuning fork. If the noise is a rattle and it started suddenly with no loss of cooling, debris or loose hardware is the first thing to rule out.
Middle Ground: Fan Motors, Blades and Bearings
The next family is the condenser fan and its motor. Bearings wear out, and when they do you get a squeal at startup that may smooth out once the motor is spinning. A blade that has been bumped or bent, sometimes by hail or a mower throwing gravel, wobbles and sets the whole cabinet humming. A failing motor also pulls more current and runs hot, so you may notice the unit cutting out on a hot afternoon and then restarting later. Fan work is a repair, not a replacement of the system, and it is usually the difference between a noisy unit and a quiet one.
The Expensive End: Electrical Components and the Compressor
A steady buzz with no fan spinning often means a contactor or capacitor is failing, and the compressor is sitting there trying to start. That is a shut-it-off situation, because a compressor straining against a bad start component can damage itself. A metallic banging or a growl deep in the cabinet can mean internal compressor wear or, sometimes, refrigerant flowing where it should not. We do not have homeowners test any of this. High voltage sits inside that disconnect and inside the cabinet, and capacitors hold a charge after the power is off. Turn the system off at the thermostat and call us for AC repair.
What You Can Safely Check, and What We Do Differently
Safe for you: look at the thermostat settings and batteries, check whether a breaker has tripped, change a dirty filter, clear leaves and grass clippings away from the outside of the outdoor unit with the system off, and confirm your supply vents are open. That is the list. Do not open panels or pull the disconnect. Can I keep running my AC if it is buzzing?
If the outdoor fan is not spinning while it buzzes, shut the system off at the thermostat and call us. That buzz often means the compressor is straining to start, and running it that way can turn a small repair into a large one.
Why does my unit rattle only when it starts up?
Startup is when the fan and compressor draw the most current and vibrate the hardest, so loose panels, worn mounting feet or a bent fan blade show up then and settle down after. It is worth having looked at before something breaks loose.
Is a screeching noise the compressor going bad?
Not always. A dry fan motor bearing screeches too, and that is a much smaller repair. We take amp readings and check the fan assembly by hand to tell the two apart before quoting any work.
